Thanks to data from Dell announced at the Dell Women Entrepreneur Network Summit, there’s now a comprehensive list of the top 50 cities for women entrepreneurs around the world. However, with infamous tech hubs like New York, London, and the Bay Area rounding out the top of the list, it’s easy to wonder what the metrics were to reach this conclusion. The Dell study focused on opportunities for women in these cities, citing factors like the operating environment, which includes market chance for women, available capital, and the size of the women talent pool. It also measured the enabling environment, which included culture, measured by the prevalence of relevant mentors, networks, and role models, along with the predominant attitudes and expectations of that society toward women entrepreneurs. And this is where the top US cities struggle, as you can see from the comparative list of US cities from the study.
Culture is what we should be focused on. Culture is what prevents companies like Uber from carrying on in ways that make dozens of women employees feel undervalued, unappreciated, and down right disrespected in the work place. Promoting the prevalence of relevant women in the tech and entrepreneurial world is the key to taking diversity to the next level.
